The wines château Hanteillan, château Laborde, château blagnac are bottling in the property.
The following vintages are currently in shops :
Château HANTEILLAN 1997 :
It is our daily wine at home actually and the vintage I serve to my guests.
I like this fruity wine which is well balanced.
Château HANTEILLAN 1998 :
A little more powerful than 1997, and younger too : a good choice for cheese and beef.
It will age until 2003-2004 to reach complete maturity.
Catherine BLASCO
Origin of the name Hanteillan
The historical archives propose the following explanation:
Anteillan : from the Gallic name Antenus and the suffix Anum, it is thought that Antenaium later became Anteianum.
Hanteillan estate is mentioned in pope Alexanders III Bull among the properties of Vertheuil Abbey, in 1179.
Nowadays, one of the vineyards of the chateau is still called Vatican. Until twenty years ago, this vineyard used to produce a wine sold under the name Tour du Vatican.
During the XVII Century, HANTEILLAN belongs to a wealthy bourgeois who buys titles for his children. Later, they ally to the Bordeaux and the Périgord nobilities. During the French Revolution, their heirs perished on the scaffold.
From 1809 onwards, the property passes into feminine hands. It is bought by Mrs. Antoinette Rose de Lapeyrière, who has the masters house, the wine storehouse, and the vathouse built. She also enlarges the estate; her daughter then her daughter-in-law, married to a wine merchant, continue her work.
In 1852, Mr. Lefort, ship-broker whose brother is a doctor in Pauillac, buys Hanteillan and the neighboring vineyard of Coutelin Merville. He then makes considerable investments in both properties that he operates all in one piece.
In 1903, both properties are purchased by a family hailing from Corrèze who keeps them until 1972, when Hanteillan is bought by the actual owners. They are cattle breeders from the Limousin and have a genuine passion for wine.
Catherine Blasco was born in 1951 in Limoges. Daughter of Maurice Mathieu, building contractor, who bought the château in 1973 by passion for wine. Mrs Blasco has been married since 1972 to Bernard Blasco, a gynaecologist-obstetrician. She has 3 children, Emilie, Antoine and Charlotte. Graduated from ESAG (Higher School of Graphic Arts, Julian Academy) in Paris in 1973, Catherine Blasco used to work in advertising, but retired in 1983 to take the lead of the vineyard.
Located on the township of Cissac, in the district of Pauillac, the vineyard is next to the label of origin Saint-Estèphe on two sides. The neighboring chateaux are Coutelin Merville and Lafon-Rochet.
At the end of the Primary era, the sea invaded the region several times, leading to deposition of limestone, marl, clay and pebbles. The soils of Hanteillan are from the Oligocene (Tertiary era) are about 30 million years old and are mainly calcareous.
Thus, the vines grow on three types of soils :
* Argilo-Calcareous soils in which many sea-urchin and sea-shell fossils can be found.
* White and green Marls.
* Fine gravelly soils called Méric Formation.
The vineyard is managed in accordance with the tradition: each wine grower is responsible for his plot of vines, which he prunes and cares for every year.
Thus, the property is divided into small areas of 5 or 6 hectares called Prix-Faits. Commonly, wine growers refer to their plot of vines as my place.
On the vineyard, we have been using machines since 1979. We use three grape harvesters, which allows us to harvest the whole vineyard within 9 days.
Then, the grapes go through a sorting table with which wine growers (usually women) polish up the quality of the harvest
Although Hanteillan is a fairly large vineyard, preserving the environment is one of our priorities: Not a single anti-acarid product has been used since 1984. Biological control is used instead and we are very proud of our population of acarid-eating insects.
We have a meteorological station on site, which allows us to limit the number of fungicides used (anti-mildew, and anti-powdery-mildew).
Area : 82 hectares (190 acres).
Vines : 45 % Merlot 46 % Cabernet Sauvignon 5 % Cabernet Franc 4 % Petit Verdot
Density : 8000 & 6600 vines/ha.Mean age of
the vines : 25 years.
Mean total production : 4600 Hl.
Jean-Marie Mehaye has been leading the vineyard and the wine growers since 1984.
The entire wine-making process is carried out at the property.
Grapes are de-stemmed and crushed.
40 stainless-steel vats equipped with a heat regulating system helps ensure a perfect temperature control during the fermentation.
The vats the most structured are mixed together and become Château Hanteillan. The most supple and fruity vats, usually from the younger vines, are the constituents of the Château Laborde and Château Blagnac.
The Château Hanteillan wine is aged partly in oak casks during 12 months and partly in stainless-steel vats. The two components are then mixed together before bottling. Château Laborde and Château Blagnac are aged in stainless-steel vats only.
The production is bottled at the estate,
16 to 20 months after the harvest.
